The definition of Gossamer is a fine, filmy substance consisting of cobwebs spun by small spiders, seen especially in autumn. The word is used to refer to something very light, thin, and insubstantial or delicate.
For some unknown reason, this word holds a lot of power for me. It has for the past several years. Because of this, I am very careful not to overuse it.
When I contemplate the word gossamer it immediately transports me to the knowing-understanding that Consciousness (the substance of everything) is less than that. Wow.
When referring specifically to Consciousness, perhaps the best we can say is that it is somewhere between something and not a thing. In other words, it's not nothing.
But saying "it's not nothing", does not transport me the way the word gossamer does.
First I contemplate the word "Gossamer" which is used to describe something phenomenal on earth like a baby's membrane. It is then immediately followed by the Contemplation that Awareness isn't even that.
Gossamer is a quick way for me to get back to reality. It's a quick reminder that this isn't real. It is a quick reminder for me to remember that this is always an illusion. It is a reminder that everything is appearing in me.
Just wanted to share something that helps me.
As Paul Hedderman often says, "If the shoe fits, wear it. Otherwise go to another store"
